Why Learn with the red horse speaks

Learning about leadership and working together needs more than theoretical learning. Of course we can read books and attend courses that explain the theory of this style of leadership or that  but it remains just that - a theory - until we put it into practice. To change our behaviour  demands a profound change at a neurological level. Essentially the neural pathways in our brain which no longer serve us need to be weakened tot74aand replaced with new ones which support the new behaviour we wish to employ. This demands a very different approach to learning which cannot take place in the classroom. It requires an opportunity to see the impact of our current behaviour and then to start to put in place the new behaviour.  In other words, it needs to be experiential. Whilst Outward Bound type challenges or a high ropes course can create this environment, the horses bring their own unique gifts to the learning.

Horses mirror back to us what our human body language is telling them – an important lesson since over 90% of communication between humans is non-verbal. Humans may not always be very good at noticing but horses are acutely perceptive. They are also very quick to notice the power of our intention – do we really mean what we say? More importantly, they show us exactly what we need to change in order to achieve our goals, improve performance, and effectively gain the co-operation and respect of others. With their sensitivity to our body language, energy and intention, they present  opportunities to practice exactly the personal and interpersonal skills that are sought after in the workplace today.

Horses are individuals with their own personalities. They can be difficult, stubborn, playful or helpful. What works with one may not work with another. In other words – they are just like our colleagues and family members. As herd creatures they are very quick to place us in their herd. Is it safe to follow us? Can we be trusted? Do we deserve respect? Unlike ropes or other pieces of equipment, they give us continual feedback and offer opportunities to practice new behaviours in a non-judgemental environment.

The solution focused, positive, coaching approach used during the red horse speaks programmes encourages self-awareness, playfulness and willingness to try new ideas. As horse and person begin to work together effectively, previously difficult exercises become easier and people soon begin to learn how they can apply the new ways of being to the situation at work or at home. Thus the new neural pathways start to be created in a way that is so memorable that the learning is used and remembered.

Beth is researching this for her PhD and is enjoying her studies which combine learning from a number of fields - neuroscience, psychology, sports science and leadership. This is enabling her to bring more learning and understanding to her work and thus makes it even more effective for her clients.
